What Causes a Dry Scalp?

A dry, itchy scalp is a common complaint and can have many causes. While a dry, itchy scalp may be the result of an underlying condition such as psoriasis or dermatitis, it often isn’t serious and can be treated with skincare and lifestyle changes. Understanding the cause is essential in finding an effective dry scalp remedy.

Over-Washing the Hair

Shampoos are formulated to remove moisture and oil from the scalp. Over-washing can strip away natural oils and reduce moisture retention, resulting in a dry, itchy scalp. Using very hot water to wash the hair can also dry out the scalp and contribute to flaking and itchiness.

Environment

Changes in climate are a common cause of a dry, itchy scalp. In colder months, the drop in humidity levels can dry out the skin, including the scalp. Excessive exposure to artificial heat, such as central heating, can also decrease moisture retention and dry out the scalp.

The Wrong Products

Using haircare products that have a high alcohol content or that upset the skin’s natural Ph balance can cause a dry, itchy scalp. Hair dye can also cause dryness as coloring the hair often requires harsh chemicals and bleach.

How to Fix a Dry Scalp

Though some causes of a dry scalp may seem unavoidable, making some simple changes can help to prevent excessive moisture loss and soothe itchiness.
